Title: Metaphysical Figure in a Piazza Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 28 x 20 inches (71.1 x 50.8 cm) Year: 1918, according to the inscription Condition: Good condition. The painted surface presents smooth applications of pigment, clearly defined geometric forms, and subtle tonal gradations throughout. Minor surface wear and handling marks consistent with age and display may be present. The canvas appears stable and display-ready, retaining its balanced coloration and overall visual impact. Presented in a black and gold-tone decorative frame showing light age-related wear. Provenance: From a private collection in Boston, Massachusetts. No additional ownership or acquisition records accompanied the work when it was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This enigmatic composition depicts a faceless mannequin-like figure standing within an open, sparsely populated piazza. Its body combines architectural, mechanical, and classical elements, including a fluted columnar base, segmented torso, spiral-shaped shoulders, and draped red fabric. Two obelisk-like structures, small distant buildings, and geometric objects occupy the surrounding space, casting elongated shadows across the green ground. The sharply defined forms, unnatural perspective, empty architectural setting, and dreamlike atmosphere recall the Pittura Metafisica imagery associated with Giorgio de Chirico. Bears an inscription reading “G. de Chirico 1918” near the lower right. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
