Bill Byrd Autographed Official American Association Randy A. Mobley Minor League Baseball (PSA/DNA Authenticated) (PSA/DNA Certification: AR20208). An exceptionally scarce Bill Byrd Autographed Official American Association Randy A. Mobley Minor League Baseball, featuring a bold blue ink signature from one of the great pitchers of the Negro Leagues and authenticated by PSA/DNA under Certification #AR20208. Byrd was a dominant right handed pitcher whose career in Black baseball stretched from the early 1930s through 1950, with the majority of his career spent as an ace for the Elite Giants franchise as it moved from Columbus to Washington and ultimately Baltimore. Known as "Daddy" to teammates and later as "El Maestro" during his play in Latin America, Byrd possessed an extraordinary pitching repertoire that included a fastball, curve, slider, sinker, knuckleballs and the spitball, and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum identifies him as one of the last pitchers permitted to legally throw the latter pitch. He became a fixture of the prestigious East West All Star Game, was among the Negro National League's leading pitchers throughout the 1940s, led the league in ERA, victories and strikeouts at various points in his career, and played an important role in the Baltimore Elite Giants' championship history. Particularly compelling is the extraordinary scarcity of Byrd single signed baseballs. Byrd died in 1991 at the age of 83, before the modern autograph hobby and organized signing circuit created the abundance of certified signed baseballs associated with many later stars. While signed documents, photographs and other forms of Byrd material may occasionally surface, baseballs bearing his signature alone appear to be exceedingly difficult to locate. In researching comparable examples, we were only able to locate one other example offered for sale. Accordingly, we make no claim that only two exist, but the apparent scarcity makes this PSA/DNA authenticated example an especially intriguing opportunity for advanced Negro League and baseball autograph collectors.
