25-Character Title 3 Metlox Grape Dinners (22) Alternates: 3 Grape Dinner Plates (21) 3 Metlox 10in Plates (20) Metlox Grape Dinners x3 (23) HiBid DESCRIPTION THREE METLOX POPPYTRAIL SCULPTURED GRAPE DINNER PLATES - HAND PAINTED CALIFORNIA POTTERY Three large dinner plates in the Sculptured Grape pattern by Metlox Poppytrail, matching the other Sculptured Grape lots offered in this sale. Each plate has the pattern's signature scalloped and gently ruffled rim with heavy relief-molded grape clusters, grape leaves in two shades of green, and curling brown vines and tendrils with small yellow blossom accents, all hand painted over a warm off-white glazed earthenware body. The wells are plain, leaving a clean center for plating. All three carry the full script backstamp, and one photographed base shows the mold number "1071" plus a small hand-inked "15". These work as a usable dinner set, as a supplement to an existing Sculptured Grape service, or displayed on a plate rack or wall where the raised grape border reads well from a distance. Bidders should note heavy crazing with brown staining across all three wells, described in detail below. Sold as a lot of three plates. Description Three round dinner plates, scalloped ruffled rim, relief-molded and hand-painted blue-purple grape clusters with green leaves, brown vines, and yellow blossom accents on an off-white ground. Each measures approximately 10-1/4 to 10-1/2 inches in diameter per the tape-measure photograph. The tape hook is laid on top of the plate rim rather than hooked over the edge, so the figure is a close estimate. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. This measurement is consistent with the 10-3/8 inch dinner plate size cataloged for the pattern. Backstamp reads "HAND PAINTED / Sculptured Grape / PoppyTrail - METLOX / Safe in oven and dishwasher Durable / MADE IN CALIF. U.S.A. / 1071", with a separate small hand-inked "15" off to one side, likely an old inventory or pricing notation rather than a factory mark. Only three plates are included; the photographs show three plates laid out side by side as well as stacked. Attribution note Metlox Pottery of Manhattan Beach, California, was founded in 1927 by T. C. Prouty and his son Willis Prouty, originally producing outdoor ceramic signs, and moved into dinnerware under the Poppytrail name in the early 1930s. The plant operated until 1989. Replacements, Ltd. catalogs this pattern as Sculptured Grape by Metlox - Poppytrail - Vernon, discontinued, with actual production dated 1963 to 1986, and describes it as raised blue grapes with green leaves and vines on white. Cataloged sizes for the line include a 6-1/8 inch saucer, a bread and butter plate about 6-1/4 inches, a salad plate about 7-1/2 inches, and a dinner plate at 10-3/8 to 10-5/8 inches, which places these plates in the dinner size. Buyers matching an existing service should be aware the pattern was also produced in an all-white version, Antique Grape W
