25-Character Title 5 Metlox Grape Bowls (21) Alternates: 5 Grape Soup Bowls (18) 5 Grape Rim Soups 8in (21) Grape Soup Bowls Set 5 (22) HiBid DESCRIPTION FIVE METLOX POPPYTRAIL SCULPTURED GRAPE RIMMED BOWLS - 8 INCH SOUP OR SALAD BOWLS Five vintage California earthenware rimmed bowls in the Sculptured Grape pattern by Metlox Poppytrail, all the same size and shape. Each has a wide scalloped rim carrying the pattern's full embossed border of blue grape clusters, deep green and sage-green grape leaves, curling brown tendrils, and small yellow blossom sprigs, hand-painted over the raised relief on an off-white ground, with a soft olive-brown line following the scalloped edge. The wells are plain with faint throwing rings, and the undersides are plain glazed white with a broad low foot ring. The shape works as a rim soup, cereal, pasta, or salad bowl, and five matching bowls in one lot is a practical set for a table. They match the single round bowl and the other Sculptured Grape lots offered separately in this sale, including the dinner, salad, and bread plates, the cups and cup and saucer sets, the large oval platter, the gravy and butter pieces, the creamer and sugar, and the shakers. All five have seen heavy use: the wells show dense overall crazing with brown and amber staining following the crazing lines, along with utensil scratching, and the rim line is rubbed and darkened in places. Sold as a lot of five bowls. Description Five rimmed bowls with scalloped edges and raised grape, leaf, tendril, and blossom borders in relief; plain wells. Glazed earthenware, hand-painted over the embossed decoration; plain glazed white undersides with low broad foot rings. Each measures approximately 8 inches in diameter per the tape-measure photograph, with a shallow bowl depth of roughly 2 inches based on the stacked profile photograph. The tape hook is resting on top of the bowl rim rather than hooked over the edge, and no separate height measurement was taken, so both figures are close estimates. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. The underside shown carries the circular printed backstamp reading "POPPYTRAIL BY METLOX - MADE IN CALIFORNIA". This stamp is badly faded and rubbed, with most letters only partly readable, and a small inked or printed numeral sits inside the mark that cannot be reliably read, so no number is claimed. Only one underside is photographed; marks on the other four are not documented and are not warranted. Attribution note Metlox Pottery operated in Manhattan Beach, California, founded in 1927 by T. C. Prouty and his son Willis Prouty, first making outdoor ceramic signs and then producing dinnerware under the Poppytrail name from the early 1930s until the plant closed in 1989. Replacements, Ltd. catalogs this pattern as Sculptured Grape by Metlox in the Poppytrail-Vernon line, discontinued, with production running roughly from 1963 to 1986, and describes it as raised blue grapes with green leaves an
