25-Character Title Metlox Grape 8in Bowl (22) Alternates: Metlox Grape Round Bowl (23) Grape Vegetable Bowl 8in (24) Poppytrail Grape Bowl (21) HiBid DESCRIPTION METLOX POPPYTRAIL SCULPTURED GRAPE ROUND RIMMED SERVING BOWL A single vintage California earthenware round bowl in the Sculptured Grape pattern by Metlox Poppytrail. The wide scalloped rim carries the pattern's full embossed border of blue grape clusters, deep green and gray-green grape leaves, curling brown tendrils, and pale yellow blossom buds, all hand-painted over the raised relief on an off-white ground, with a soft brown line following the scalloped edge. The well is plain and gently rounded with faint throwing rings, and the underside is plain glazed white with a broad low foot ring. The form works as a rim soup, pasta, salad, or side-serving bowl and is a useful open shape for fruit or rolls on the table. This is the same pattern as the other Sculptured Grape lots offered separately in this sale, including the cups and cup and saucer sets, the plates and salad plates, the large oval platter, the gravy and butter pieces, the creamer and sugar, and the shakers, so bidders assembling a service should follow those lots as well. The bowl shows overall fine crazing in the glaze with light gray utensil marking in the well and scattered small specks on the underside. Sold as a single bowl. Description One round bowl with a wide scalloped rim, raised grape-and-leaf border in relief, plain rounded well. Glazed earthenware, hand-painted over the embossed decoration; plain glazed white underside with a low broad foot ring. Measures approximately 8 inches in diameter and approximately 2-1/4 inches tall per the tape-measure photographs. In the diameter photograph the tape hook is resting on top of the rim rather than hooked over the edge, and in the height photograph the hook plate is standing on the tabletop beside the bowl, so both figures are close estimates and could read slightly larger at the extreme rim. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. The underside carries a crisp circular printed backstamp reading "POPPYTRAIL BY METLOX - MADE IN CALIFORNIA", with a small printed "71" to the upper right of the mark and faint indistinct tick marks flanking the word "BY" for which no meaning is claimed. Attribution note Metlox Pottery operated in Manhattan Beach, California, founded in 1927 by T. C. Prouty and his son Willis Prouty, first making outdoor ceramic signs and then producing dinnerware under the Poppytrail name from the early 1930s until the plant closed in 1989. Replacements, Ltd. catalogs this pattern as Sculptured Grape by Metlox in the Poppytrail-Vernon line, discontinued, with production running roughly from 1963 to 1986, and describes it as raised blue grapes with green leaves and vines on a white ground. Related versions exist, including an all-white grape pattern and a pink grape colorway, so buyers matching an existing service should compare col
