25-Character Title 2 Metlox Grape Cups (20) Alternates: 2 Grape Cups No Saucers (23) 2 Sculptured Grape Cups (23) Poppytrail Grape Cups x2 (24) HiBid DESCRIPTION TWO METLOX POPPYTRAIL SCULPTURED GRAPE CUPS - CUPS ONLY, NO SAUCERS Two vintage California earthenware cups in the Sculptured Grape pattern by Metlox Poppytrail. Each is the pattern's footed, ring-turned cup form with an applied sculpted vine handle glazed in mossy olive-brown, decorated on one side with a raised, hand-painted cluster of blue grapes, deep green and gray-green grape leaves, a curling gold-brown tendril, and small pale yellow blossom buds, with the reverse left plain white. These are cups only - no saucers are included in this lot. They are the same pattern as the other Sculptured Grape lots offered separately in this sale, including the complete cup and saucer sets, the plates and salad plates, the large oval platter, the gravy and butter pieces, the creamer and sugar, and the shakers, so a buyer needing replacement cups or building a larger service should watch those lots as well. Both cups are clean and bright with strong color, and the flaws are limited to faint interior use marks and a few small kiln specks and tan flecks on the bottoms. Sold as a lot of two cups. Description Two cups, footed with ring-turned bodies and applied sculpted vine handles glazed olive-brown, raised grape and leaf decoration hand-painted on one side only. Glazed earthenware, hand-painted over embossed relief on an off-white ground. Each measures approximately 3-1/4 inches tall and approximately 3-1/2 inches across the rim per the tape-measure photographs. In the height photograph the tape hook is standing on the tabletop beside the cup rather than hooked to it, and in the rim photograph the hook is laid across the top of the rim rather than clamped to the edge, so both figures are close estimates. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. No backstamp is visible on either cup bottom. The undersides are plain glazed white with only a small dark kiln speck and two faint indistinct surface smudges that cannot be read as a mark, so no maker mark is claimed on the pieces themselves; the identification is based on the pattern, form, and handle treatment matching the marked saucers and serving pieces in this same consignment. Attribution note Metlox Pottery operated in Manhattan Beach, California, founded in 1927 by T. C. Prouty and his son Willis Prouty, first making outdoor ceramic signs and then producing dinnerware under the Poppytrail name from the early 1930s until the plant closed in 1989. Replacements, Ltd. catalogs this pattern as Sculptured Grape by Metlox in the Poppytrail-Vernon line, discontinued, with production running roughly from 1963 to 1986, and describes it as raised blue grapes with green leaves and vines on a white ground. Related versions exist, including an all-white grape pattern and a pink grape colorway, so buyers matching an existing service
