Inscribed Verso: "Joute de Corbeaux" A powerful mid-century abstract painting by celebrated Quebec modernist Guy Michon, created in 1964 during one of the strongest periods of his career. Titled "Joute de Corbeaux" ("Battle of the Ravens"), the work is an energetic composition of expressive palette-knife forms, sweeping gestural lines, and richly layered passages of black, violet, burnt sienna, ochre, and white. Michon's paintings from the 1960s are admired for their vigorous surface, sculptural application of paint, and lyrical abstraction rooted in the Quebec Automatist movement. This dramatic composition embodies the artist's mature style, combining spontaneous gesture with a powerful sense of movement and rhythm. Artist Biography: Guy Michon (1925–1979) was a Montreal-born painter associated with the generation that followed the Automatistes. After meeting Paul-Émile Borduas in 1950, he studied at Montréal's École des Beaux-Arts under Jacques de Tonnancour. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he exhibited extensively, including multiple solo exhibitions at the Dominion Gallery, one of Canada's premier commercial galleries of the period.Michon became known for his richly textured abstract paintings executed primarily with a palette knife. His works are represented in the collection of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, and his paintings have appeared regularly at major Canadian auction houses including Cowley Abbott.
