1964-D Jefferson Nickel Claimed Rim Anomaly

A 1964-D Jefferson nickel whose holder is marked ERROR - R.R. RIM by the consignor, meaning a railroad rim. The coin is uncirculated or near it, sharply struck, with satin white gray luster and faint gold tone, and the D mint mark is clear right of Monticello. In the closeups the rim stands up as a broad, flat, slightly overhanging shelf with a fine secondary ridge inside it, clearest at the bottom of the obverse. That raised metal is smooth and carries the same toning as the rest of the coin, with no file marks and no burrs, so it appears struck in rather than added afterward. The anomaly has not been authenticated as a mint error by any grading service. One closeup is blocked by mylar and glare and the edge was never photographed, so this is consistent with a partial collar strike, not proof of one. Black crusty deposits on the reverse rim are post-mint. Estimated Value: Comparable sales data was not available. We encourage bidders to do their own research before placing a bid. Sold as-is.
