A 1964-D Jefferson nickel in a 2x2 holder the consignor has marked ERROR. The coin is uncirculated or close to it, with sharp detail on the hair and on Monticello's pillars, satin luster and pale gold toning. The D mint mark sits right of Monticello where it belongs. Along the lower obverse rim there is a second raised concentric ridge just inside the normal rim, so the rim through that arc looks doubled, wider and flatter than at the top of the coin. The ridge is smooth, follows the circumference exactly, and shows no gouging, no tool marks and no break in the toning, so it looks struck in rather than added later. That is an observation, not a certification: the anomaly has not been authenticated as a mint error by any grading service, and the edge was never photographed, which is the view that would settle it. Dark crusty deposits on the reverse rim are post-mint residue. Estimated Value: Comparable sales data was not available. We encourage bidders to do their own research before placing a bid.
