1943-D Lincoln Wheat Cent Steel

A 1943-D Lincoln wheat cent on zinc-plated steel, in a stapled 2x2 flip marked 1943 D with STeeL below. The mint mark was checked at magnification and shows a closed bowl against a straight left upright, a D. The coin is medium gray and moderately worn, with the plating thinned and gone in places, leaving a dull gray-blue cast over the fields and lighter bare-steel highlights on the hair, cheek, jaw and shoulder. There is light brown-tan toning in the field to the right of the portrait and near the rim, with scattered small dark specks. The reverse runs medium to dark gray with the plating worn, and the lettering and wheat ears are complete though slightly soft. No red rust and no corrosion blooms of note. How to judge these: an original steel cent is dull gray like this one, while a bright, uniformly white example has usually been reprocessed or replated, and those sell for less. Over one billion were struck in 1943, making them among the most common United States coins in existence. Estimated Value: $1 to $3. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot.
