This late 19th-century Doulton Lambeth stoneware 10" tall vase features an exquisite central band decorated with incised sgraffito sheep resting in a pastoral field. Crafted by renowned artist Hannah B. Barlow, the central buff-colored section captures the fine line detail and lifelike depiction of animals for which she was famous. The central band is bordered above and below by raised beaded banding, stylized leaf motifs, and rich cobalt blue and olive green glazes on the flared neck and foot. Hannah Bolton Barlow (1851–1916) was the first female artist hired at Doulton Lambeth in 1871 and became one of the factory's most celebrated decorators. A pioneer for women in British art pottery, Barlow was internationally acclaimed for her spontaneous, freehand sgraffito technique, sketching animals directly into wet clay without prior guidelines. Preserved in excellent condition, this rare antique vase represents an iconic piece of Victorian art pottery and an essential addition for collectors of Doulton Lambeth and Arts & Crafts ceramics.
