This authentic 1993 Maritime folk art wall relief is an exceptional creation by renowned Bouctouche, New Brunswick woodcarver Charles "Woodchuck" Bernard. Hand-carved from a heavy live-edge wood slab complete with its natural bark border, the piece showcases remarkable depth, dimension, and rustic texture. The central composition features a meticulously rendered songbird perched above its nest, flanked by deeply carved rustic elements including an interlocking chain, twisted rope, heavy shears, and a sheath knife. Inscribed and dated "Wood Chuck '93" on the lower right, the panel retains its original warm finish and comes ready to display with wiring pre-installed on the reverse. Charles "Woodchuck" Bernard (1948–2017) remains a celebrated figure in Canadian Maritime folk art. Based in Bouctouche, Bernard built a widespread regional reputation for his masterful high-relief carvings and larger-than-life persona, famously operating out of a Bouctouche Bay studio built in the shape of a pirate ship. Known for his ability to transform solid timber into intricate, lifelike representations of wildlife and regional artifacts, Bernard’s original creations are held in private folk art collections worldwide and serve as prized pieces of Maritime cultural heritage.
