Antique Seth Thomas Double Dial Calendar Clock

Antique Seth Thomas Clock Co. double-dial mechanical calendar clock, measuring approximately 26.5" tall and housed in a beautifully shaped dark wood case with turned decorative accents. The upper clock dial features bold black Roman numerals, traditional hands, the Seth Thomas name and trademark, and is marked “Patented Dec. 28, 1875.” The lower perpetual-style calendar dial displays the numbered days of the month along with separate windows for the day of the week and month. Particularly unusual and desirable, the calendar rolls are printed in Spanish, with examples visible including “Viernes,” “Octubre,” “Junio,” “Julio,” and “Agosto.” Research into comparable Seth Thomas double-dial calendar clocks confirms that this style dates to the late 19th century. Seth Thomas produced sophisticated calendar clocks using rotating paper rolls to display the day and month, with the calendar mechanism coordinated with the time movement. Comparable examples from the period are commonly identified as approximately 1870s–1880s Seth Thomas calendar clocks. The December 28, 1875 patent date visible on this example is also found on documented Seth Thomas double-dial calendar clocks of the period. The interior retains an aged Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn., U.S.A. paper instruction/caution label, and the mechanical works, pendulum and calendar mechanism are visible inside. Winding key is included. The clock was wound during inspection and produced a dinging/chiming sound; however, it has not been fully tested for timekeeping, calendar advancement, strike accuracy, or long-term operation, and full functionality is not guaranteed. The clock displays considerable antique character, including age-related wear to the wooden case, patina and oxidation to metal components, discoloration, scratches, crazing and areas of paint loss/wear to the dials, particularly around the winding points and hardware. The Spanish-language calendar makes this an especially interesting variation for collectors of Seth Thomas clocks, antique American clocks, perpetual calendar clocks, Spanish-language Americana, and 19th-century horology.
