Title: Red Figures and Black Serpent Technique: Gouache on paper Measures: 19 x 17 inches (48.3 x 43.2 cm) Year: Circa late-20th century Pop Art period Condition: Good condition. The work presents strong color saturation and clear graphic definition throughout. Minor wear consistent with age and handling may be present. The paper appears stable and display-ready, preserving its bold linear composition and overall visual presentation. The frame exhibits visible paint losses, abrasions, and edge wear. Provenance: From a private collection in Pennsylvania. Reportedly discovered during the 2003 clearance of a former artist’s residence containing paintings, books, and studio materials. The circumstances surrounding its earlier acquisition were not recorded. The above provenance reflects the ownership history that accompanied the artwork at the time it was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This vivid composition presents an interlocking arrangement of animated red figures against a bright blue ground. A large mask-like profile dominates the left side, while an elongated figure loops across the upper and right portions of the image. A black serpentine form extends horizontally through the lower center, creating a strong visual counterpoint to the surrounding red forms. Bold black contours, repeated motion lines, and simplified anatomical features generate a pronounced sense of movement and rhythmic energy. Bears an inscription reading “K. Haring” near the upper left. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
