Title: Harbor with Steamships Technique: Ink on paper Measures: 14 x 12 inches (35.6 x 30.5 cm) Year: Circa late-19th century Post-Impressionist period Condition: Good condition. The sheet presents clear linear definition and extensive fine ink work throughout. Minor toning, surface wear, and handling marks consistent with age may be present. The paper appears stable and display-ready, preserving the composition’s intricate detail and overall presentation. Presented framed. Provenance: Private collection, Montreal; reportedly acquired from a French private owner during the 1980s before passing by family descent. Information regarding its history prior to that acquisition is limited. The above provenance reflects the ownership history that accompanied the artwork at the time it was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This detailed harbor scene depicts a small sailboat moored in the foreground while several steam-powered vessels travel across the open water beyond. A wooden pier extends from the right shoreline, where small figures observe the activity on the river. Dense networks of short, directional ink lines describe the rippling water, sloping embankment, and expansive sky. Billowing clouds and columns of smoke create movement across the upper portion of the composition, while the contrast between the stationary boat and distant vessels adds spatial depth. Bears an inscription reading “Vincent” near the lower right.
