A late 19th or early 20th-century watercolour on paper by Umberto Ongania (Italian, 1875-1933), depicting a classic Venetian topographical vista. The composition shows the island of San Giorgio Maggiore viewed across the lagoon, with a gondola in the mid-foreground and various sailing vessels in the distance. The work is rendered in an atmospheric style with soft washes and fine details to the architectural elements. The painting is signed U. Ongania in the lower right corner and is further identified by a gilt metal nameplate attached to the frame inscribed U. ONGANIA. It is housed in a deep, moulded wooden frame with a gilt finish and remains behind glass. Dimensions: Frame approx. H 25.4 cm x W 32.4 cm; Sight size approx. H 16.5 cm x W 24.8 cm. Condition: The paper is in fair condition but shows significant age-related deterioration. There is extensive foxing and brown spotting across the sky and water areas, likely due to historical moisture exposure. The paper exhibits general toning and yellowing throughout. The frame shows minor surface wear and small losses to the gilt finish. The verso of the frame has historical water staining to the brown paper backing, though the structural integrity appears sound.
