ca. early-mid 19th century; Attributed to New Hampshire, unusual, arched top and sides small traveler's trunk or dresser box in poplar wood with solid wood end and bottom, steam bent arched top and sides, brown painted ground, stencil painted design on front (similar to known New Hampshire boxes), stenciled owner initials "L.B", and hand painted polychrome painted floral design. The lid is surface mounted with brass hinges and has a thin wire hook and eye keeper with bentwood panels tack-nail mounted; 10" x 6 1/2" x 5 1/2" H; Condition: wire repairs to mount points of hinges. The box is similar in form to 18th century hide covered traveler's boxes, but has no evidence of ever being covered with leather. It appears to be a 19th century "I can make that" re-make of an earlier form.
