ca. Late 18th-early 19th century; Attributed to rural French Alps region, this walnut double-lidded salt box from one piece of wood has a scroll-cut egg-shape center tote (similar to Alpin regional chair backs), "orange-peel" Fresian carved sides, compass star in diamond carved ends and lid with similar compass star in diamond carved design with extended ear lifts. The lids are pin nail hinged and box retains old stained finish; 11" x 4 1/4" x 8 1/2"H; Condition: good, minor fading of stained surface.
