intage Maitland-Smith decorative lidded jar and matching ashtray, featuring a distinctive Asian-inspired design in charcoal gray with applied brass-tone ornamentation, copper-colored trim, and raised stud accents. The lidded jar features stylized coin and scroll motifs on the sides, while the lid is decorated with an additional Asian character motif. The underside retains the impressed “Maitland-Smith” maker's mark. Maitland-Smith is known for decorative accessories combining traditional forms with mixed materials and metal detailing, including boxes and other functional decorative objects. An especially interesting provenance detail is the handwritten note retained inside the lid reading: “Gift from Gay Kirk while Naval Aviator in Vietnam War.” The note is included with the set and suggests it was acquired or gifted in connection with service during the Vietnam War; the precise date and circumstances are unknown. Lidded jar measures approximately 4" tall. Matching square ashtray features four cigarette rests and coordinating decoration. Both show age-related surface wear, patina, scratches and other signs of use consistent with vintage decorative objects. See photos for details.
