Vintage Russian Matryoshka nesting doll set consisting of five graduated wooden dolls, with the largest measuring approximately 8" tall. This colorful traditional folk-art set features hand-painted female figures surrounded by bold floral decoration in shades of red, orange, yellow, black, green, and purple. Each doll opens at the center to reveal the progressively smaller figure stored inside, culminating in the smallest solid doll. The largest Matryoshka retains an original Russian-language paper label on the underside, adding interest and provenance to the set. The label identifies the item as a (5-piece Matryoshka) and shows a printed price of 8.00, along with additional Soviet-era style product/manufacturing information. The combination of the Cyrillic label, wooden construction, traditional nesting design, and hand-painted folk floral decoration makes this an appealing example of Russian decorative folk art. Matryoshka dolls, also known as Russian nesting dolls, stacking dolls, or babushka dolls, became an internationally recognized form of Russian folk art beginning in the late 19th century. Traditionally turned from wood and painted as a graduated family of figures, vintage examples are collected for their regional painting styles, craftsmanship, colorful decoration, and cultural history. This set displays especially attractive large-scale floral motifs, stylized faces, black linework, and warm lacquered surfaces. The smallest figure differs slightly from the others with a prominent purple-painted background, adding character to the complete five-doll progression. Largest doll measures approximately 8" tall. Vintage condition with expected surface wear, scratches, paint and finish variations, and other signs of age and use. Original paper label shows considerable age and wear but remains attached to the underside. A wonderful collectible for enthusiasts of vintage Russian nesting dolls, Soviet-era collectibles, USSR folk art, Matryoshka dolls, Babushka dolls, hand-painted wooden dolls, Russian floral folk art, Eastern European décor, vintage wooden toys, and international folk art.
