1977 Navajo Storm Pattern Rug – 1st Prize

Exceptional vintage 1977 Navajo handwoven wool rug/textile featuring a classic Storm Pattern / Storm Design with strong geometric imagery in warm brown, cream, black, gray, and red tones. Measuring approximately 29" x 35", this Southwestern weaving is especially desirable for its original exhibition documentation and First Prize award ribbon. The original Museum of Northern Arizona Navajo Exhibition tag identifies the piece as a “Storm” type and includes “Many Farms” and Norma Curley, along with the year 1977 and an original period price of $400. Many Farms, Arizona is well known in connection with Navajo weaving and Southwestern textile traditions. Also retained with the rug is its purple FIRST PRIZE – Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff exhibition ribbon. The reverse of the ribbon is handwritten “Small Storm,” “Navajo Show 1977,” “John & Clara Tanner,” and dated 7/14/77. The surviving tag and award ribbon provide excellent provenance and significantly enhance the collectible appeal of this vintage textile. The rug displays a highly detailed Navajo Storm Pattern composed of stepped geometric forms, diamond motifs, linear elements, and contrasting borders characteristic of traditional Southwestern weaving. The neutral earth-tone palette with small red accents gives the piece a striking Southwestern, Native American, Western, rustic, and desert décor aesthetic.
