Black Painted Ladder Back Side Chair

Single black painted ladder back side chair with a shaped crest rail carrying a carved raised oval boss, four serpentine ladder slats, S curved front legs, a shaped scalloped front seat rail and an upholstered drop in slip seat in a tan and gold basketweave check. It measures about 19 inches at the seat and 41 inches to the crest. The underside carries sinuous no sag steel springs, a stapled black cambric dust cover and four corner glue blocks, which indicates mid 20th century or later manufacture, and the black is a later paint rather than original ebonizing. No maker stamp or label. Condition is fair. Paint is worn through to bare wood across the carved crest boss and along the crest top edge, the right rear stile has multiple small nail holes and paint chips, blue underpaint shows through at the crest back, and the dust cover is heavily soiled.
