Pierre Adolphe Valette (French, 1876-1942) This oil on canvas depicts a bustling, misty urban street scene, with a central figure in a dark coat pushing a two-wheeled cart amidst other indistinct figures and horse-drawn vehicles. The muted palette of browns, grays, and soft ochres captures the atmospheric quality of a foggy day, with gothic spires and buildings receding into the background. Signed "A. Valette" lower right. Framed. Pierre Adolphe Valette was a French Impressionist painter renowned for his cityscapes, particularly those of Manchester, England, which are now held in the Manchester Art Gallery. He is also significantly remembered as the influential tutor of the celebrated British artist L.S. Lowry.
