Gertrude Abercrombie (American, 1909-1977). An oil on board depicting a stylized woman in a crimson dress and golden collar, set against a dark, nocturnal teal sky with a full moon. The figure wears a flat black hat adorned with a bunch of purple grapes, characteristic of the artist's sparse, surrealist aesthetic. Signed "abercrombie" in the lower left. Housed in a wide, light-toned wooden frame. Gertrude Abercrombie was a prominent American surrealist painter based in Chicago, often referred to as "the queen of the bohemian artists." Her work is known for its dreamlike, austere interiors and landscapes, frequently featuring recurring motifs like moons, cats, and solitary women. A central figure in the mid-century jazz scene, her lean and rhythmic compositions often drew direct inspiration from the improvisational nature of the music she loved. Dimensions: Unframed: 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches Framed: 19 1/8 x 17 1/8 inches Provenance: Private collection.
