Rooster and Figures. Marc Chagall (French-Russian, 1887-1985). An oil on canvas featuring a dreamlike arrangement of a large, vibrant yellow and red rooster head emerging from a dense bouquet of yellow, white, and red flowers. The ethereal blue background contains floating figures, including a woman's profile and a mother with a child, rendered in a soft, gestural technique. Signed "MARC CHAGALL" in the lower right. Framed in a black wooden frame with gilded corner ornaments. Marc Chagall was a pioneering modernist known for his whimsical, high-color aesthetic that blended elements of Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism. His work frequently drew from Eastern European Jewish folklore and his personal memories, often featuring gravity-defying figures and symbolic animals. After moving to Paris in 1910, he became a central figure in the Ecole de Paris, eventually gaining international acclaim for his stained glass, stage sets, and poetic canvases.
