Two Antique Strobel & Wilken German Special Export

This lot features two antique German dolls produced for the export market and bearing the Special mark associated with the distributor Strobel & Wilken. The first doll measures 20 inches and is a shoulder-head model with a body constructed of white kid leather and cloth. The bisque head is incised with the script mark Special and features fixed brown glass eyes, painted lashes, feathered eyebrows, and an open mouth revealing four inset upper teeth. The lower arms and hands are bisque, and the body features pin-jointing at the hips and knees. It includes a pair of white cotton drawers with eyelet lace trim. The second doll measures 24 inches and is a socket-head model on a fully jointed composition and wood body. The back of the neck is incised Special 4 Germany. This doll features brown glass sleep eyes, an open mouth with four teeth, and a blonde mohair wig. The ball-jointed body retains its original finish. The doll is outfitted in a black cotton dress with white polka dots and lace trim, matching bloomers, white drawers, and black knit stockings. 20 inches, 24 inches. These dolls remain in good antique condition with expected wear appropriate for their age. The bisque heads are free of visible cracks or restorations. The kid leather body exhibits typical surface abrasions and staining, and the doll requires a toe repair. The composition body shows characteristic crazing and a stable crack on the upper right thigh. The blonde mohair wig and clothing show light signs of handling.
