Offered is an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent, Small Letters variety, in Fine (F) condition. This classic early U.S. cent features an eagle in flight on the obverse and the denomination surrounded by a wreath on the reverse. Please review the photos for the exact condition, remaining detail, and surfaces. The Flying Eagle Cent was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre and was produced for circulation in 1857 and 1858. The 1858 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and had a total mintage of 24,600,000 pieces. The Small Letters variety can be distinguished from the Large Letters variety by the spacing between the “A” and “M” in “AMERICA” on the obverse. On the Small Letters variety, the letters are clearly separated. The coin was struck in the distinctive 88% copper and 12% nickel composition, weighs approximately 4.67 grams, and has a plain edge.
