1944-D Silver War Nickel, struck at the Denver Mint. This World War II-era Jefferson Nickel was produced with a special silver alloy to conserve nickel for the war effort. Please review the photos for the exact condition, surfaces, strike, and overall appearance. Beginning in 1942, the U.S. Mint changed the composition of Jefferson Nickels to approximately 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. This wartime alloy was used through 1945. The 1944-D had a mintage of 32,309,000 coins. The large “D” mint mark above Monticello on the reverse identifies the Denver Mint issue and is one of the defining features of wartime Jefferson Nickels. The coin weighs approximately 5.00 grams, measures about 21.2 mm in diameter, and contains approximately 0.0563 troy ounces of silver.
