1943-S Silver War Nickel, struck at the San Francisco Mint. This wartime Jefferson Nickel is part of the special silver-alloy coinage produced during World War II to conserve nickel for the war effort. Please review the photos for the exact condition, surfaces, strike, and overall appearance. Beginning in 1942, the U.S. Mint changed the composition of Jefferson Nickels to conserve nickel for military equipment. These wartime nickels were made from an alloy of approximately 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese and were produced through 1945. The 1943-S had a mintage of 104,060,000 coins. The prominent “S” mint mark above Monticello on the reverse identifies the San Francisco Mint issue. The coin weighs approximately 5.00 grams, measures about 21.2 mm in diameter, and contains approximately 0.0563 troy ounces of silver.
