Charming oval pet portrait by Anthony Barham, depicting two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels reclining together on a richly colored red-covered surface within a traditional interior, one black-and-white and the other chestnut-and-white, both rendered with the expressive character and affectionate detail for which Barham is particularly known. The composition is presented in an elaborate oval gilt frame with raised floral and rose ornament, beaded inner molding, and alternating brushed gilt panels. Signed “Anthony Barham” along the lower edge of the painting. The reverse retains the artist’s printed label reading “Anthony Barham, 83 Portobello Rd., London W11 2QB, 0171-727-3845, Decorative Artist, Commissions Taken.” Barham grew up in his family’s antiques business on London’s Portobello Road, later relocating to Virginia and becoming especially associated with portraits of dogs and other animals; published biographical sources note that pet portraiture has formed an important part of his commissioned work. The painting and frame display scattered surface dust, light rubbing, minor scratches and age-related wear, with some rubbing and small losses to the gilt decoration, but overall retain an attractive decorative presentation. Measures 7"H x 9"W and 11.5"H x 14"W including frame.
