Eclectic decorative and scholarly group of six leather-bound and leather-spined volumes dating from the early 19th through early 20th centuries, comprising three matching volumes of H. Rouvière’s Anatomía Humana Descriptiva y Topográfica, Spanish second edition, published in Madrid by Casa Editorial Bailly-Baillière in 1930, including Tomo I Cabeza y Cuello, Tomo II Anatomía del Tronco, and Tomo III Miembros – Sistema Nervioso Central; an 1805 London volume of The Plays of William Shakespeare, accurately printed from the corrected text of George Steevens with engravings after designs by Henry Fuseli and explanatory and historical notes assembled by Alexander Chalmers, the photographed example being Volume VIII containing Cymbeline, Titus Andronicus, Pericles, and King Lear—bibliographic records confirm this Chalmers edition was issued in nine volumes in 1805; James Thomson’s The Seasons, with a life of the author by Patrick Murdoch and illustrations credited to Schmolze, published in New York by James Miller; and Elisabeth Hamill Davis’s For Each Day a Prayer, published by Dodge Publishing Company, New York, an edition documented from 1905. The books present an attractive shelf appearance with gilt lettering and ornament, raised or decorative spine bands, contrasting title panels, and richly aged brown leather surfaces. Condition varies throughout with expected rubbing, scuffing, edge and corner wear, leather dryness and losses, abrasions, fading and wear to gilt, occasional staining, foxing and toning to pages, and other evidence of age and use; the Rouvière volumes in particular show substantial exterior wear while retaining their handsome matched appearance. A visually engaging mixed library group spanning literature, poetry, devotional material, and medical anatomy, with the early Shakespeare volume providing particular antiquarian interest.
