Collection of 8 Antique Leather Bound Books

Collection of eight antique leather-bound volumes spanning the early to late 19th century, highlighted by the complete five-volume 1810 London edition of The Memoirs of the Duke of Sully, Prime-Minister to Henry the Great, translated from the French by Charlotte Lennox and printed for William Miller, Albemarle Street; the set is illustrated with engraved portraits and retains handsome period brown leather bindings with gilt ornamental tooling, decorative bands, and red-and-gilt spine labels. Bibliographic records confirm the William Miller edition was issued in five volumes in 1810. Also included are The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope, Edinburgh, William P. Nimmo, 1868, in an elaborately gilt-decorated leather binding; Practical Conveyancing: A Selection of Forms of General Utility by Benjamin L. Oliver, revised by Peter Oliver and George C. Hopkins, Fourth Edition, Portland, Dresser, McLellan & Co., 1881; and Satire for the Solitary, and the Social: By an Epicure, published in New York by DeWitt C. Lent & Company. The books display the appealing character expected of working 19th-century library volumes, including rubbing and scuffing to leather, edge and corner wear, scattered spotting and foxing, occasional staining, cracking and surface losses to some bindings, and other age-related wear; nevertheless, the group presents attractively as an assemblage of early historical, literary, legal, and satirical works, with the complete Duke of Sully set forming the strongest component. A recent auction of eight mixed 19th-century leather-bound literary volumes realized £40, while the greater completeness, decorative bindings, and early 1810 Sully set represented here support a stronger range for this group.
