Attractive assembled group of ten decorative leather-bound and half-leather volumes, predominantly 19th century, presenting a handsome assortment of English literature, poetry, history, travel, and Spanish-language works, many with elaborately gilt-tooled spines, raised bands, contrasting title labels, ornamental floral devices, and marbled or gilt-edged text blocks. Identifiable titles include George Otto Trevelyan’s The Early History of Charles James Fox, London, Longmans, Green & Co., 1881; Sir William Napier’s English Battles and Sieges in the Peninsula, John Murray, London, 1885; Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy paired with Jonathan Swift’s A Tale of a Tub, J. C. Nimmo and Bain, London, 1882; Oliver Wendell Holmes’s Poetical Works, Household Edition, Houghton, Osgood and Company, Boston, 1879; Archibald Forbes’s Colin Campbell, Lord Clyde, Macmillan and Co., London and New York, 1895; Charles Kingsley’s The Heroes; or, Greek Fairy Tales for My Children, Macmillan and Co., London, 1876; Half Hours in Many Lands from the Half Hour Library series; Alejandro Pérez Lugín’s La Casa de la Troya, 35th edition, Madrid, 1924; and Julio Cejador y Frauca’s ¡De la Tierra…!, Madrid, 1914. The bindings range from restrained calf and morocco treatments to richly ornamented gilt floral spines, making the group particularly appealing as a decorative library collection. Condition varies throughout with expected age-related rubbing, scuffing and losses to leather, worn corners and spine extremities, occasional cracking or looseness to hinges, scattered foxing, toning and staining, and other evidence of prolonged use; nevertheless, the group retains considerable visual character and many bindings remain notably decorative. Comparable mixed groups of antique leather-bound literary volumes continue to appear at auction, with value driven primarily by binding quality, completeness, condition, and individual titles rather than age alone.
