Group of nine 19th-century volumes comprising several decorative and scholarly sets in period bindings. Included are Edmondo De Amicis, Morocco: Its People and Places, complete in two illustrated volumes, Philadelphia, Henry T. Coates & Co., 1897, translated by Maria Hornor Lansdale; this recognized two-volume edition contains numerous illustrations and was issued in 1897. Also included are three volumes of Vida de D. Fr. Bartholomeu dos Martyres, attributed on the title pages to Fr. Luiz de Cacegas and Fr. Luiz de Souza, Braga, Livraria Escolar de Forte & Cia., 1890, forming the three-volume Portuguese biographical work on the Archbishop of Braga. Completing the lot are four volumes of Chambers’s Repository of Instructive and Amusing Tracts, London and Edinburgh, William and Robert Chambers, from the mid-19th century; the work was published in the 1850s and is known in multi-volume form. The books present an appealing variety of bindings, including gilt-decorated leather spines with raised bands, gilt floral and urn ornament, contrasting title panels, mottled and marbled leather treatments, and gilt-stamped cloth. Condition varies throughout, with expected age-related rubbing, scuffing, cracking and drying to leather, edge and spine wear, occasional losses and separation along joints or backstrips, surface marks, foxing, toning, staining, ownership inscriptions and other signs of use; one binding shows particularly notable deterioration and partial separation at the spine. Despite the wear, the group retains strong decorative shelf presence and offers an interesting combination of travel literature, Portuguese religious biography, and Victorian popular literature.
