Collection of nine antique leather-bound literary and historical volumes spanning the late 18th through early 20th centuries, presenting an attractive assortment of period bindings with extensive gilt spine decoration, raised bands, contrasting title labels, and richly aged leather surfaces. The group includes three volumes of Jean-François Marmontel’s Moral Tales, Third Edition, London, printed for T. Cadell, J. Murray, T. Becket and H. Baldwin, 1781, with the title pages noting illustration with sixteen engravings; three volumes of Specimens of the Less-Known British Poets, with memoirs and an introductory essay by Rev. George Gilfillan, published in Edinburgh by James Nichol and in London and Dublin by James Nisbet & Co. and W. Robertson; two volumes of The Life and Adventures of Peg Woffington by J. Fitzgerald Molloy, dated 1884 and bound in elaborately gilt-decorated leather; and The War in the Crimea by General Sir Edward Hamley, K.C.B., Eighth Edition, London, Seeley and Co. Limited, 1900. The books retain a particularly decorative shelf presence, ranging from the restrained gilt floral tooling of the Marmontel volumes to the dense ornamental work of the Gilfillan and Molloy bindings. Condition is commensurate with age and use, with rubbing, scuffing, cracking and losses to leather, worn corners and spine extremities, occasional looseness or deterioration at joints, age toning, foxing, staining and scattered marks to pages, and other evidence of prolonged handling and storage; one binding exhibits substantial deterioration and separation along the spine/board area. Despite these faults, the collection remains visually appealing and includes several desirable 18th- and 19th-century editions suitable for a decorative library or antiquarian-book collection.
