19th Century English Grey Bacchus & Satyr Pitcher

English relief-molded stoneware pitcher in a pale grey glaze, richly modeled in high relief with a Bacchic woodland scene of nude and partially draped satyrs or attendants gathered among grape clusters, vine leaves, tree trunks, and scrolling foliage, alluding to Bacchus and the classical wine cult. The sculptural decoration continues around the body, while the substantial naturalistic branch-form handle rises dramatically from the shoulder and terminates in clustered fruit. The shaped pouring lip and deeply modeled surface give the piece a particularly strong sculptural presence characteristic of English relief-molded wares of the mid-19th century; closely related Ridgway examples with Bacchus, satyrs, grapevines, and grey stoneware bodies are generally dated around the 1840s. The underside bears an impressed ornamental cartouche containing what appears to read “1796”, with impressed “24” below; these should be cataloged as impressed pattern or factory markings rather than automatically interpreted as the date of manufacture. The jug shows age-appropriate surface soiling and staining, particularly around the foot, minor glaze irregularities, small firing imperfections, and general handling wear; no obvious major breakage is visible from the photographs.Measures 6.5"H x 6.25"W x 4"D.
