Decorative 19th-century-style chinoiserie jardinière or cachepot of shaped cylindrical form, constructed in metal and finished in black lacquer with gilt and muted polychrome decoration. The body is painted with continuous East Asian-inspired landscape scenes populated by figures in traditional dress amid trees, flowers, bridges, and waterside settings, while the upper border is embellished with scattered cloud forms. A bold scalloped crown-form rim edged in gilt gives the vessel a particularly theatrical silhouette, complemented by a pair of loose brass ring handles at the sides and a dotted gilt border encircling the base. Black-lacquer and gilt chinoiserie jardinieres and decorative vessels were fashionable throughout the 19th century, drawing heavily on Chinese export decorative traditions. The surface exhibits extensive age-related craquelure throughout the lacquer, together with scattered losses, rubbing and fading to the painted and gilt decoration, edge wear, scratches, and oxidation/patina to the brass handles, all contributing to its strongly aged decorative character; interior and underside show additional surface wear consistent with use. Measures 4.75"H x 7"W x 5.5"D
