A striking matched pair of Victorian silverplated fish-form serving dishes by James W. Tufts of Boston, dating to the late 19th century and bearing pattern number 4365. Each elongated oval dish is richly modeled with a dimensional fish swimming across a hammered, water-like interior, the fish rendered with detailed scales, fins, gills, and facial features, while a twisted-rope border finishes the perimeter and the tail end is worked with radiating fin-like detailing. The undersides bear the distinctive Tufts / Boston / Plate Guaranteed style maker’s mark with number 4365. James W. Tufts began producing silverplated wares in Boston in the 1870s, and this exact 4365 fish-plate form has been documented as a James W. Tufts production dating circa 1885. Both dishes exhibit expected age-related surface scratching, tarnish, oxidation, rubbing, and areas of wear to the silverplate, with minor irregularities from use, but retain strong detail and an especially decorative Victorian presentation.
