Nelson Rumano (Zimbabwean, b. 1955), carved and polished serpentine stone sculpture titled The Thinker, created in 1993 and presenting a warmly expressive seated figure in a compact, contemplative pose, its oversized oval head resting above deeply recessed eyes, an elongated nose, gently smiling mouth, folded arms, and boldly simplified hands. Executed in the modern Zimbabwean Shona sculptural tradition, the work combines smoothly rounded volumes with crisp incised lines and retains the stone’s richly mottled charcoal, olive-brown, and reddish coloration beneath a softly polished surface. The artist’s full signature, “Nelson Rumano,” is incised along the lower backside edge. The sculpture displays scattered surface scratches, scuffs, small abrasions, light whitish transfer marks, and minor edge nicks consistent with handling and display, particularly across the back and upper portions, but remains visually striking and structurally intact. Measures 17" H x 9.5" W x 5.25" D.
