An Italian Baroque style commode of canterano form and Italian origin. The chest is constructed from walnut with a rectangular top featuring a serpentine front edge and moulded rim. The facade is composed of three long drawers, each decorated with recessed shaped-panel mouldings and a central brass escutcheon cast with shell and foliate motifs. The drawers are constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints using light secondary wood linings and are accompanied by three skeleton keys. The piece is flanked by rounded front stiles enriched with carved scroll and foliate ornamentation, supported by short cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet. The lower apron is shaped and features carved scrollwork to the centre. Dimensions: H 107 cm x W 137 cm x D 63.5 cm. Condition: Fair antique condition. The top surface exhibits wear consistent with age, including scratches, staining, water marks, and historic darkened cracks. There are minor chips and abrasions to the carved sections of the stiles and feet. A joint separation is visible at the lower right corner where the stile meets the apron. General scuffs and surface marks are present throughout.
