THE PATTERN OF YUCHI GONG'S SINGLE WHIP SAVING THE LORD. <br>L:33cm H:27cm This is a large blue-and-white jar of Yuan Dynasty, with short straight mouth, broad plump shoulder, rounded belly and tapering lower body supported by shallow ring foot. The pale cyan-white glaze is decorated with layered cobalt patterns: sea wave patterns encircle the rim, while the main body depicts a classic historical opera story. Two civil officials ride horses conversing, accompanied by an armed military attendant, set against auspicious clouds, plantains, rockeries, bamboo and trees. Robes, armor and facial expressions are finely rendered, with a scroll cartouche labeling the story theme above. Painted with imported Su Ma Li Qing cobalt pigment, the blue tone is rich bright with distinct ink wash layers and powerful realistic brushwork. Such historical warrior-and-scholar motifs originate from Yuan operas and story novels, serving as iconic decoration of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain.
