NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > An exceptionally large American Mid-Century Modern executive desk by Standard Furniture Company of Herkimer, New York, measuring approximately 103" long × 41.5" deep × 29" tall. The desk is extremely heavy, estimated at approximately 200 to 300 pounds, and will require multiple capable persons and appropriate moving equipment for removal. The expansive wood top has an unusual elongated canted form, with broad projecting ends, subtly angled corners, and a gently bowed working edge. A reddish-brown wood finish, streamlined suspended storage compartments, tapered pencil-post legs, and brass patina leg caps create the classic modern executive office profile associated with the 1950s and 1960s. Comparable Standard Furniture executive desks are documented with angular tops, wood veneers, brass hardware, suspended drawer cases, and tapered capped legs. The left suspended cabinet contains a deep file drawer fitted with a recessed metal pull and key lock. The right cabinet contains three graduated drawers with matching recessed pulls. The shallow upper drawer includes fitted wooden compartments for pencils and office accessories, while the deep lower drawer retains a removable divider. An integrated locking system secures all three right-side drawers when the upper right drawer is closed and locked. The lower drawers can be opened only after the upper drawer has first been unlocked and opened. One key is included. The inside of the center right drawer bears the Standard Furniture Company factory stamp reading ~ STANDARD ~ U.S.A. ~ HERKIMER, N.Y. ~. Standard Furniture produced office furniture in Herkimer for much of the twentieth century and remained an important local manufacturer until the factory closed in 1978. The company’s surviving catalogs document a broad range of desks and institutional office furnishings, while period history records unusually large custom walnut veneered conference furniture produced by the factory during the 1960s. The desk top has been wiped but has not been thoroughly cleaned or polished. Dark marks or stains remain near the center and may improve with careful cleaning or restoration, though no result is guaranteed. Numerous remnants of old adhesive tape from notes remain attached to the cabinet fronts, knee panel, and other areas. Scratches, abrasions, finish wear, blemishes, edge losses, and evidence of prolonged office use are present throughout. Despite cosmetic wear, the desk remains acceptable for utilitarian office use in the present form. The distinctive canted top, brass-capped tapered legs, suspended cabinets, substantial construction, fitted drawer interiors, and locking arrangement also make the desk a collectible example of American Mid-Century Modern office furniture worthy of thoughtful preservation and restoration.
