FEDERAL SHERATON STYLE FULL PENCIL POST BED

NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > A vintage full-size hardwood pencil-post bed measuring approximately 80" long × 54" wide overall. The frame features four tall tapering posts with ring-turned details and dowel-mounted urn-form finials. The hardwood displays pronounced dark flowing grain consistent with walnut, although the wood species has not been conclusively verified. The broad solid headboard and lower open footboard are united by coordinating profile-scrolled crest rails, each flanked by the tall turned pencil posts. The headboard presents a wide shaped panel with a projecting rolled upper edge and deep inward scrolls beside the rear posts. Unlike many pencil-post beds fitted only with a low plain foot rail, this example features a substantial two-rail footboard with a profile-scrolled upper board above a lower horizontal rail, giving the bed a more balanced and architecturally finished appearance. The slender turned posts, shaped crest rails, restrained ornament, and formal proportions reflect the American Federal and Sheraton Revival tradition. Pencil-post beds of this form were produced in several domestic hardwoods, including maple, cherry, walnut, and mahogany. The wood species of this example has not been conclusively established. Replacement metal side rails are included and appear acceptable for continued use. No cross slats are included, and suitable slats or another support system will be required before installation of a box spring and mattress. CONDITION REPORT > Settled dust, scattered surface marks, finish variation, and typical evidence associated with age, use, and materials are present. The headboard, footboard, posts, and finials appear reasonably sturdy as shown. The side rails are later metal replacements rather than original wood components. No cross slats, mattress, box spring, or bedding are included.
