AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A striking woodworker artist hand carved Jerusalem olive wood sculpture depicting Joshua and Caleb carrying an enormous cluster of grapes, measuring 11.5" long by 4.5" wide at the raised base, with the figures standing approximately 11" tall overall. The composition illustrates the biblical account in Numbers 13:23, in which a grape-bearing branch from the Valley of Eshcol was carried on a pole between two men. Joshua and Caleb are rendered as bearded, armored figures with deeply carved garments, sandals, equipment, facial features, and textured details. The oversized grape cluster hangs prominently from the curved carrying pole between them. The elongated olive wood base is carved with a geometric ground pattern and displays the naturally varied grain associated with Holy Land olive wood. The underside bears repeated Jerusalem stamps and a retailer’s mark reading THE DOME / SOUVENIR & GIFTS STORE / PROP. TARAZI BROS. / 13 SALADIN STR., JERUSALEM. This familiar Joshua and Caleb grape-bearing image became an enduring symbol of the fruitfulness of the Holy Land and has been widely represented in Jerusalem olive wood carving and other regional decorative arts. CONDITION REPORT > The curved carrying pole or staff supporting the grape cluster has undergone an acceptable repair. Additional age-related separation and repairs are visible beneath the base.
