AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A hand sculpted McCarty Pottery Purple Martin bird measuring 4.25" long, 2" wide, and 1.5" tall, modeled with a sleek elongated profile, low-slung body, recessed eyes, and prominent forked or split tail. The stylized form captures the characteristic shape and posture of a martin rather than attempting a painted, naturalistic representation. A richly mottled nutmeg brown glaze accentuates the deeply textured body, individually worked feather pattern, and weathered organic surface. The underside retains an unglazed oval foot surrounding a loosely formed, abbreviated hand-applied McCarty signature. Such signatures were individually rendered and can be compressed or difficult to decipher. McCarty Pottery identifies nutmeg brown, cobalt blue, and jade as signature glazes and confirms that pieces are hand-signed on the bottom or back. Lee and Pup McCarty began producing pottery in Merigold, Mississippi, in 1954, creating artistic and functional forms rooted in Mississippi clay and Delta imagery. Their distinctive sculptures and signature glazes have become widely collected examples of Mississippi studio pottery.
