t is Scott #32 (Type I black overprint reading up on the Panama 2c Fernández de Córdoba design). It belongs to the Seventh Series (1909–1921) of Canal Zone stamps, which used American Bank Note Co. portrait designs of Panama overprinted for Canal Zone use. The 2c Cordoba with Type I overprint was first issued around November 8, 1909 (with later printings into 1911). Key identification features matching your photos: Red/vermilion frame, black portrait of the man in a ruff collar labeled Fernández de Córdoba, “CORREOS / REPUBLICA DE PANAMA,” “2” in the side tablets, “2 CENTESIMOS DE BALBOA” at bottom, and the black “CANAL ZONE” overprint vertically on the sides (CANAL left, ZONE right, reading up). Your examples are used, with cancels.Type I characteristics (vs. later types): Typically includes a “C” with serifs top and bottom, and slanting serifs on certain letters. Type II (Scott #38 for the 2c, from ~1912) is distinguished mainly by a left-tilted “O” in ZONE and other letter differences; Type III is rarer and thinner/irregular.
