Old Koban series (1876–1879) or transitional printings around that period.Apparent denomination: The lower corners appear to show ½ (half sen).Color: Brown / grayish-brown.Condition: Used with a partial black cancel; typical aging and some staining for a 19th-century Japanese stamp. Early Japanese stamps (especially Koban and pre-1900 issues) were heavily forged. Many circulating examples are forgeries or reprints. Genuine attribution often requires expert examination. CancelThe cancel is a partial black Japanese handstamp or roller cancel. From the photo it is too incomplete and worn to read clearly. Visible fragments appear to be Japanese characters rather than a Western-style date or town name. genuine used example of a common ½ sen Koban or early Chrysanthemum type in average condition:Typical market value: $5 – $25
