New South Wales 1897 1d Arms / Shield (Diamond Jubilee issue), Die I / Type 1.IdentificationIssue: 1897 Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee commemorative series (Arms of the Colony / Seal of the Colony design).Denomination & colour: 1d rose-red / scarlet / vermilion (shades vary).Design: Crowned shield of the New South Wales coat of arms with central star, lion, and smaller stars, “1d” in circles on both sides, “NEW SOUTH WALES POSTAGE” at bottom.Die / Type: Die I (Type 1) — as you noted. Key diagnostics for Die I:First pearl on the upper part of the crown is merged / indistinct (not a clear separate circle).Shading under the fleur-de-lis is weaker or indistinct.The “S” in “WALES” tends to be more open.Catalogue numbers (approximate; shades and perfs create sub-listings):Stanley Gibbons: Around the SG 288–297 range for the 1d Arms (Die I is the earlier printing).Scott: #98 (main listing); Die I sometimes noted as 98e or distinguished in specialist listings.
