U.S. Scott #65: the 1861 3¢ rose George Washington stamp (Second Design, no grill).It is from the 1861–1867 series, with the Washington profile in rose (or rose red/shades) and the same ornate frame as #64. The color here leans toward the common rose red (distinguishing it from the scarcer pink #64). Perf 12, early printings. The heavy barred cancel is typical for surviving used examples of this very common workhorse stamp.Swedish Tiger lists #65 as one of the most plentiful 19th-century U.S. stamps due to massive print quantities. Values are low for average used copies but rise modestly for fresh color, light cancels, or better centering. Shades range from pale rose to deep rose red.Siegel Auction Galleries sees these in volume in classic U.S. lots. Used #65 realizations are usually $5–$30 for sound examples; nicer VF with attractive cancels can reach $50–$150+.
