Wicaret Gravé par Massard, Grav. du Roi, 1790 (as published on the plate) An elegant eighteenth-century French engraving depicting Endymion, the beautiful shepherd of Greek mythology, shown asleep beneath a crescent moon. The composition reproduces a celebrated work by the great Italian Baroque master Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) and was translated into print through a refined drawing by Jean-Baptiste Wicar, one of Jacques-Louis David's most accomplished pupils. Artist Biography Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino (1591–1666) was one of the foremost painters of the Italian Baroque. Celebrated for his dramatic chiaroscuro, expressive figures, and religious and mythological subjects, his works are represented in the Louvre, the National Gallery (London), the Prado, and major museums worldwide. Jean-Baptiste Wicar (1762–1834) was a French painter, draftsman, collector, and pupil of Jacques-Louis David. Highly respected for his meticulous drawings after Old Masters, Wicar supplied many of the preparatory drawings used by leading French engravers of the late eighteenth century. Charles-Clément Bervic (1756–1822)—also known as Charles Clément Balvay—was among France's greatest line engravers. A member of the Académie Royale and later the Institut de France, Bervic became internationally renowned for his technically brilliant reproductive engravings after Renaissance and Baroque masters.
